Yard Driver Jobs in Connecticut
A Yard Driver, also known as a Yard Jockey or Yard Spotter, plays an essential role in the logistics industry. Their primary responsibility is to organize and manage the transportation yard, which involves moving and parking large trucks and trailers in designated spaces, loading and unloading cargo, and ensuring that all vehicles and equipment are well-maintained and safe for use. They also communicate and coordinate with dispatchers, warehouse teams, and drivers to ensure smooth operations and timely deliveries. Additionally, Yard Drivers are responsible for conducting regular inspections, reporting any damages, and adhering to all safety regulations and protocols.
The job requires certain skills and certifications. A Yard Driver must have excellent driving skills, a keen eye for detail, problem-solving abilities, and the physical stamina to withstand long hours and harsh weather conditions. They must also have strong communication and coordination skills to work effectively with various teams. A commercial driver's license (CDL) is typically required, along with a clean driving record and experience operating heavy vehicles. Before becoming a Yard Driver, a person may have roles such as a Delivery Driver, Forklift Operator, or Warehouse Associate, which can provide the necessary experience in handling large vehicles and understanding warehouse operations.
