iHire Announces Deployment of New Proprietary Skills Database
New classification system will immediately increase iHire’s ability to accurately match qualified candidates with open positions
Frederick, MD – Following extensive cross-departmental collaboration and weeks of hard work, iHire’s technical team released a series of tools created in house and designed to maximize their ability to evolve with an ever-changing employment landscape. Using the thousands of skills provided daily from job seekers as part of their registration process, the iHire team was able to take advantage of crowdsourcing to quickly develop the database and expand their knowledge of the areas of expertise that are most helpful for their users in different industries.
“Some job skills are extremely unique to a specific position, while others are more generic in nature and can be leveraged if your career path takes a new turn,” explained Steve Flook, Director of Engineering at iHire. “For this reason we incorporated a scoring system that measures the transferability of certain skills. The higher the score, the more transferable a skill would be to other positions/titles. Our system can draw such conclusions based on our various online communities, and therefore can be more intelligent in recommending jobs and extracting required abilities from employer postings.”
Flook credits the team effort as one reason why iHire was able to complete this large undertaking in a rather short period of time. “A core tenet to reviewing, classifying, and mapping user entered skills into their official names was our approval system. Everyone on the team had equal rights to change the database and all changes required a simple peer approval,” he said. “This freedom and elimination of hierarchy within the team helped foster an environment where everyone could contribute equally to its success.”
The advancements made via the creation of iHire’s new skills repository and classification system have already led to upgrades for a number of internal tools as well as customer resources including their job classifier, skills recommender/autocomplete function, iScore (which shows how a job seeker’s resume compares with the requirements of a specific position), and iMatch (a job matching algorithm). Flook hinted that we should expect further improvements in the future, saying, “We have even more ideas up our sleeves with how to leverage this data.”
